The Peoples’ Voice Café: Pamela Jean Agaloos + Cactus Rose

What better way to end the second Saturday of The Village Trip than in the warm company of the Peoples’ Voice Café, featuring Pamela Jean Agaloos, a familiar face on New York’s Irish/Scottish trad scene, and Cactus Rose NYC, a Native Americana act from Lenapehoking.
Born to Filipino parents on a US Naval Base in Chicago, Pamela Jean Agaloos has a background in musical theater in the Philippines, where she lived until 2011. Pamela has been invited to some of the city’s premier folk sings, including Exceedingly Good Song Night and the Sunnyside Singers Club, and she has also been a guest vocalist for the band New York Brogue. Although a frequent figure in the Manhattan trad scene, Pamela makes the Iona Bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, her session home.
Vocalist and songwriter Kandia Crazy Horse leads Cactus Rose NYC, a three-piece band, with a voice that evokes indigenous country styling and the bluesy haunting clarity of the late Cherokee folksinger Karen Dalton. Rounded out by seasoned musical veterans Nico Zaca and Lonnie Harrington, Cactus Rose NYC’s show is infused with a rebellious indigenous spirit that combines elements of southern rock, cosmic country, Appalachian folk, and Laurel Canyon LA sounds into a blend of lovely melodies, memorable riffs, and affecting storytelling.

The Peoples’ Voice Cafe meets in the Judson Memorial Church Assembly Hall, just south of Washington Square Park. Admission is by contribution ($20 recommended), but no one turned away for lack of money. Home-baked goodies are available along with coffee and tea. The doors open at 7:15pm.
