The Ahn Trio is applauded for its freewheeling, genre-bending approach to chamber music and its original programming. Innovative collaborations with visual and multimedia artists, B-boy dance companies, DJs, and rock bands have earned them the nickname “classical revolutionaries” (Newsday). Formed by three Juilliard-trained Korean-American musical trailblazing sisters – pianist Lucia, cellist Maria, and former member, violinist Angella – the Trio has released nine critically acclaimed albums; Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac was No. 8 on the Billboard charts for 26 weeks. Composers who have written for them include Pat Metheny, Michael Nyman, Hyung-ki Joo, Maurice Jarre, and Laurie Spiegel. The Ahn Trio has performed at President Obama’s White House, and in New York, Buenos Aires, Vienna, Leipzig, Beijing, Istanbul – wherever their music was in demand.
The Trio’s vision to spread their Indie classical music beyond concert halls is coming to life, as their music continues to appear in figure skating, modern dance, films, and TV. Most recently, Ahn Trio’s music was featured in a documentary film Escape from Extinction – Rewilding, narrated by Meryl Streep. In 2024, new works were commissioned by Maria Ahn Music in collaboration with 3AD to celebrate their late mother Young Joo Rhee’s legacy: Bogdanovic’s Prisms – Six Songs by Sting, which will be recorded next year, as well as a new work by Atanas Ourkouzounov, which was commissioned in their late mother’s name. The Ahn Trio Ensemble continues to perform in its signature classic Ahn Trio style, now joined by sought-after “rock star” violinists Zach Brock and Khullip Jeung. New collaborations are on the horizon.
