Music and Voices of the March for Civil Rights, Then and Now will honor the sixtieth anniversary of the March on Washington, with an evening of song, dance, and oratory that address the way our society confronts discrimination, inequality, and oppression. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Conceived and created by award-winning poet, playwright, and storyteller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevillagetrip.com\/daniel-carlton\/\">Daniel Carlton<\/a> (<em>March On<\/em>) and directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevillagetrip.com\/david-deblinger-2023\/\">David Deblinger<\/a>, this unique evening with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thevillagetrip.com\/fred-johnson\/\">Fred Johnson<\/a> as melodic host, will entertain, elevate, and inspire.<\/p>\n<p>All profits will go to the <strong>National Jazz Museum in Harlem<\/strong>, an institution whose raison d\u2019\u00eatre is part of the Black experience.<\/p>\n<p>Working with HB Studio, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and the Cooper Union, The Village Trip has assembled a stellar group of musicians, speakers, and performers who will express the joy and heartache of bending the arc of the moral universe toward justice. <em>Let Freedom Ring!<\/em> \u2013 like The Village Trip itself \u2013 will honor the ongoing struggle for freedom, equality, and social justice for all.<\/p>\n<p>The evening brings together a diverse group of artists to celebrate all our humanity through story, song, poetry, movement, and excerpts from Daniel Carlton\u2019s <em>March On<\/em>, a play\u00a0with<em>\u00a0a cappella<\/em>\u00a0songs and music that capture the stories of a\u00a0multicultural group of people who participated in the March on Washington. The play follows the characters from their arrival\u00a0on the Great Mall to the climactic\u00a0moment of Dr. Martin Luther King\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech. Intertwined with these stories will be freedom songs past and present, plus poetry and spoken word by special guest artists who will connect past struggles with today\u2019s fights for justice.
