SUMMARY:The East Village\, The Music and the Explosions of the 1960s\, ‘70s and ‘80s\, Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The edgy East Village has long led the way in cultural revolutions. This tour begins at the first place where Patti Smith read poetry\, beginning the journey that led to her breakthrough. Why did she and so many creatives come here? Follow Ann McDermott on a stroll back through East Village music venues of the 1960s and ‘70s and learn about the performing artists who helped shape our culture.\nMusic was abundant\, apartments cheap\, and the venues of the East Village gave artists a chance to play – and for some to become world famous. We’ll visit over ten sites where musical and artistic history was made\, see where some of your favorite album covers were shot. We’ll discuss how the “scene” in NYC in the mid-70s opened doors and allowed for an explosion of creative energy and drive. It wasn’t just the dingy clubs on the Bowery\, such as CBGBs\, that enabled this to happen – there were economic factors as well. Who were the music impresarios discovering the artists and helping catapult them to worldwide fame? It all happened here in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Explore the careers of the New York Dolls\, the Ramones\, Blondie\, Talking Heads\, Led Zeppelin\, the Who\, and Jimi Hendrix and discover how this neighborhood and these venues helped establish their artistic reputations and following. We’ll also hear about some of the many lesser-known figures who were no less talented but didn’t become quite as famous. \n\nAnn McDermott\n\nSTARTING LOCATION: St. Mark’s in the Bowery Church\, 131 East 10th Street/Second Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS ON EVENTBRITE

SUMMARY:Eliza Garth: Sonatas and Interludes by John Cage American Primitive & Inventors of Genius Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Pianist Eliza Garth performs Sonatas and Interludes\, John Cage’s 1947 masterpiece for prepared piano\, a composition regarded as a formative piano work of the 20th Century. St Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery is known and loved as a gathering place for innovative musicians\, dancers\, and poets\, including Allen Ginsberg and Cage.\n“Sonatas and Interludes is absorbingly lovely when played with the commitment and delicacy that pianist Eliza Garth has devoted to her performance…Garth\, with a touch that allowed for almost ethereal transparency\, played the meditative mind game expertly… there was nary a cough\, a dropped program or even an audible rustle anywhere in the audience through the whole hour” – Washington Post \nThe concert is part of The Village Trip’s American Primitive and Inventors of Genius Weekend. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS FROM HUMANITIX

SUMMARY:Electric Circus: presented by Composers Concordance & Marsyas Productions
DESCRIPTION:The Electric Circus was a late 1960’s phenomenon. Mel Powell\, born 100 years ago\, was a force there. Powell started out writing music for kids for the Benny Goodman Orchestra\, but he gradually grew tired of that. One thing led to another and soon we see him circulating with Milton Babbitt and Bethany Beardsley. Take note of the soundscape Mel Powell created for a short Gumbie movie. \n“For the past 30 years\, Composers Concordance has been a booster for local composers\, through both its concerts across the city and a record label.” The Wall Street Journal \n“Enterprising new music organization” The New York Times \n“The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way….ingenious fun” Classical-Modern Music Review \n“Edgy…boisterous…demanding our attention” San Diego Story \n“These men and women are creating exciting music with elements of jazz\, world music and many experimental techniques blended with equal parts classical tradition and playing techniques.” Music Notes: Classical music evolves by Carlton Wilkinson \nComposers \n\nWilliam Anderson\nBruce Arnold\nDan Cooper\nJane Getter\nPatrick Grant\nKyle Miller\nMel Powell\nGene Pritsker\nDave Soldier\n\nPerformers \nBodies Electric: \n\nWilliam Anderson\, John Chang\,\nAdam Negrin\, Kyle Miller – guitars\n\nMy Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama: \n\nBruce Arnold\, Greg Baker\, Jane Getter\,\nGene Pritsker – electric guitars\n\n\nAdriana Valdez\nJessica Bowers\n\nTICKETS\n$20 in advance via Eventbrite \n$30 at the door \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS ON EVENTBRITE

SUMMARY:Simeon ten Holt: Canto Ostinato
DESCRIPTION:[Image: Kees Wieringa at the piano. Photo Ranjani Nirosha] \nCanto Ostinato is a ground-breaking minimalist piece by Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. Written in 1976 and first performed in 1979\, the work has acquired cult status. This two-hour version for two pianos marks the composer’s 100th birthday year\, and will be played by the formidable Dutch new-music specialist Kees Wieringa and the Trip’s resident pianist Joan Forsyth. The theme runs continuously through the piece\, with overlapping layers and subtle alterations as it hypnotically unfolds. \nKees Wieringa is a Dutch pianist\, composer\, writer and cultural entrepreneur. \nHe came to prominence for his performances of the Dutch composers Jakob van Domselaer\, Daniel Ruyneman and Simeon ten Holt. Kees Wieringa graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1986. He has built an international career over the years with his piano recitals and compositions. \nIn 2010\, Kees Wieringa premiered the opera Drebbel. The main character of the piece is the Alkmaar-educated inventor Cornelis Drebbel (1572–1633) (performed by rock singer Thé Lau)\, who was interested in themes of alchemy and spiritualism. “Wieringa was inspired by the early Baroque music with its polyphonic while emotional musical lines. Composers such as Monteverdi and Handel sound along while today intervals\, chords and rhythms can be heard\, reminding the minimal music of Philip Glass.” \nKees Wieringa was museum director of the Kranenburgh Museum in Bergen\, and since 2016 has been the director of the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum in Qatar. Wieringa has also organised and curated an exhibition ‘The Majlis – Cultures in Dialogue’ together with UNESCO. It was featured all over the world. About his time in Qatar he published a bestseller ‘Inshallah’. At the moment he established his own cultural center in the neighborhood of Paris\, named YXIE – Manoir des Arts. \n\nKees Wieringa\nJoan Forsyth\n\nThis event is free to attend on the steps of St Mark’s Church in the Bowery.\n

SUMMARY:Killing the Silence: A Concert for Ukraine: Special Guests Chorus Dumka
DESCRIPTION:Concert to benefit Ukraine Children’s Action Project\, featuring Ukrainian composers and music that reflects the country’s very vibrant and vital culure. \nVasyl Barvinsky was one of the first Ukrainian composers to achieve international acclaim. As a member of the Ukrainian intelligentsia he was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1948 and sentenced to 10 years in the Gulag. Many of his works were destroyed. Our program features the third movement of his dramatic “ Love “ cycle for solo piano\, entitled “Fight\, Pain the Victory of Love”. \nValentyn Sylvestrov writes in a post-modern musical style\, using traditional tonal and modal techniques to create a delicate fantasy-world with an intense emotional impact. He said of his art\, “I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists.” \n Leo Ornstein was born in Kremenchuk\, (now Ukraine) in 1895\, and came to the Lower East side as an 11 year old piano prodigy. His family were refugees from the pogroms incited by the antisemitic nationalistic organization\, “Union of the Russian People.” He grew up to be recognized as a world-class pianist and an adventurous and audacious composer\, pioneer of the tone-cluster. \nSergei Bortkiewicz was born in Kharkov in 1877\, but lost the family estate his mother and sister to the Bolsheviks and the Red Army invasion. He spent much of his life as a refugee\, later to the Nazis\, undergoing extreme hardships and financial difficulties. Nevertheless he produced a remarkable body of work\, writing in the grand romantic tradition of beautiful melodies and rich harmonies. \n The Bowers-Fader Duo explore Ukraine’s rich folk music tradition with a set of songs for mezzo and guitar. \nComposer and violinist Andrii Didorenko uses folk material in his “Postcards from Ukraine\,” performed with his wife the pianist Yuliya Basis. \nWe are proud to present the the members of Ukrainian Chorus Dumka\, fresh from performances in Carnegie Hall and on Saturday Night Live. \nThe Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York was established in 1949 as a male chorus by Ukrainians who escaped from the oppression and terror of the Soviet regime. The name comes from the Ukrainian word dumka\, which translates to thought\, and duma\, a form of epic folk song that originated in Ukraine in the 16th century. The founders of this vocal ensemble sought to preserve and cultivate the rich secular and sacred musical heritage of Ukraine. In 1959\, Dumka became a mixed chorus allowing them to expand their repertoire. Their musical library includes over 400 works from Ukrainian composers\, as well as many western composers. Since its inception\, the chorus has performed concerts at Alice Tully Hall\, Avery Fisher Hall\, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dumka sings annual Christmas concerts at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. The chorus has also performed across Ukraine and other European countries as well as in several cities in The United States. \nDumka  appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live\, in February 2022 singing Prayer for Ukraine. The chorus has been invited to dozens of venues to represent the culture of Ukraine through the performance of beautiful secular and sacred music\, while raising awareness and relief funds to support the people of Ukraine.  In August 2022\, Dumka performed at the opening ceremonies of the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium singing One Moment In Time. \nThe members of The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of NY are honored to continue serving the community\, through broadening and cultivating the music from its native land. Since 1991\, Dumka has performed under the direction of Vasyl Hrechynsky. \n“As far as I am concerned\, romanticism is not the bloodless intellectual commitment to a program\, but the expression of my most profound mind and soul.” — Serii Bortkiewi \nComposers \n\nVasyl Barvinsky\nLeo Ornstein\nAndrii Didorenko\nSerii Bortkiewicz\n\nPerformers \n\nBowers-Fader Duo\nTony Lu\, piano\nAndrii Didorenko\nYuliya Basis\nEric Eaton\, cello\nVanessa Lee\, piano\nJoan Forsyth\, piano\nTeryn Kuzma\, soprano/bandurist\nThe Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n BUY TICKETS ON EVENTBRITE

It is a response to climate change\, pollution\, resource depletion\, and nuclear capability. The piece immerses the audience in a near-future where the degradation and extinction of nature is symbolized by a choir of languages from throughout the globe and the apparition of a landscape painting catching fire and restored by the reversal of humanity’s destructive ways.
