DESCRIPTION:Those who came to Bernstein Remix at TVT2025 will already be acquainted with the awesome Ahn Trio\, “classical revolutionaries” (Newsday) who combine razor-sharp technique with the fierce energy of rock stars\, seamlessly fusing classical music with rock\, jazz\, and multimedia. Their exciting and innovative collaborations have wowed audiences around the world. President Obama invited them to perform at the White House State Dinner in honor of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and First Lady Kim Yoon-ok. The Village Trip is delighted to welcome them back with The Art of Collaboration: Sting\, Jobim and Baechle\, an unmissable evening of duos\, trios and quartets.\nInspired by Sting’s 1994 collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim on the song “Insensatez”\, for piano\, cello and violin\, The Ahn Trio celebrates music that transcends genres and borders with a performance of Dusan Bogdanovic’s Prisms: Six Songs by Sting for piano\, violin\, cello\, and guitar. Commissioned by 3AD and Maria Ahn Music\, Bogdanovic’s suite reimagines Sting’s songs through the lens of chamber music scored for various instrumental formations. It is dedicated to Young Joo Rhee\, the Ahn sisters’ late mother who was “a true inspiration.”  The Ahn Trio will be joined by renowned guitarist James Moore. \nThe concert also features Pat Metheny’s Yuryung\, composed especially for The Ahn Trio\, and the world première of We Are Here (Only for a Little While) by Mark Baechle\, who will join us for the evening and speak about his work. \nThe Trio – sisters Maria\, cello\, Lucia\, piano\, and violinist Khullip Jeung – will also present the world première of an exciting new work by Emmy Award–winning composer Mark Baechle\, scored for cello and piano. \n\nThe Ahn Trio\nJames Moore\nKhullip Jeung

SUMMARY:25 Decades: The Horszowski Trio

Inset: William Anderson] \nSince their New York debut in 2011\, the Horszowski Trio – Jesse Mills\, violin; Ole Akahoshi\, cello; Rieko Aizawa\, piano – has toured extensively throughout North America\, Europe\, the Far East\, and India\, earning a reputation as one of the most vital chamber ensembles of their generation. The centerpiece of their concert is the US premiere of 25 Decades\, a piano trio by William Kentner Anderson — composer\, guitarist\, and Director of Classical and New Music for The Village Trip — performed alongside Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C major\, Op 87\, a pairing that sets Anderson’s new work in direct conversation with the Romantic tradition it both inherits and unsettles.\nBrahms understood the bourgeois interior as both refuge and horizon — a world worth holding together\, even as its edges frayed. Anderson’s composition is in quiet argument with that inheritance: musical elements that cohere\, that genuinely reach toward one another\, while registering — just beneath the surface — the centrifugal forces that no amount of craft can entirely resolve. The work does not mourn this. It simply knows it. \nAnderson comes to composition from a post-maximalist perspective\, having worked closely with Elliott Carter\, Milton Babbitt\, Charles Wuorinen\, and George Walker\, among others. The Horszowski Trio\, a passionate advocate for new music\, has commissioned and premiered numerous works\, making them natural collaborators for a piece as ambitious and searching as this one. \nAugusta Read Thomas\nThe concert also features a Homage to the New York School with “Etude No 5 for Solo Piano: Rain at Funeral March – Homage to Morton Feldman” (2005) by Augusta Read Thomas; “Projection 1 for Solo Cello” (1950)\, and “For Aaron Copland for Solo Violin” (1981) by Morton Feldman; and “Suite for Toy Piano” (1948) by John Cage. \nMorton Feldman and John Cage met in January 1950 at Carnegie Hall\, both men walking out of a New York Philharmonic performance after Webern’s Symphony rather than sit through the Rachmaninoff that followed. Cage was living at 326 Monroe Street on the Lower East Side\, and Feldman moved into the same building. That shared address is where the New York School (Feldman\, Cage\, Christian Wolff\, Earle Brown) effectively formed. \nFeldman’s deepest affinities were with the painters — Philip Guston above all (a friendship that ruptured painfully)\, Rothko\, de Kooning\, Frankenthaler — and that’s a Village and Tenth Street world: the Club on East Eighth\, the Cedar on University Place. Rothko Chapel\, For Philip Guston\, De Kooning\, For Frank O’Hara — his titles are practically a downtown address book. \nThe Horszowski Trio takes its inspiration from the musicianship\, integrity\, and humanity of the pre-eminent pianist Mieczysław Horszowski\, whose last pupil at the Curtis Institute was the Trio’s own pianist. The New Yorker thought them “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” while the Boston Globe found them “eloquent and enthralling.”

SUMMARY:Notes from a Life: An Evening with Allen Shawn
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening in the company of Allen Shawn\, author\, pianist\, and composer whose six-year sojourn in the West Village marked a creative turning point when – influenced by encounters with clarinetist Benny Goodman – he began blending classical music with elements of jazz. His lively music is characterized by emotional directness and an openness to a variety of idioms. “Notes from a Life” is a sonic diary featuring chamber pieces from across four decades by this multifaceted musician celebrated for his “distinctly urban energy.”\nThe son of legendary New Yorker editor Wiliam Shawn and brother of actor and writer Wallace\, Allen Shawn grew up with the music of Bach\, Bartok\, Stravinsky\, Berg\, Copland and Leon Kirchner\, as well as the jazz greats he heard at the Half Note and the Five Spot. He began composing at a young age\, though considers that his mature works date from 1977\, just before he moved to the West Village\, where encountered Benny Goodman. The two men met weekly to play chamber music for fun\, and Goodman commissioned from Shawn a concerto which he sadly never played\, considering it too demanding so late in his career. It became Shawn’s “Trio for Clarinet\, Cello\, and Piano\,” a composition heavily tied to those Greenwich Village years\, which also included music for some half-dozen Joseph Papp productions and the chamber opera The Music Teacher to a libretto by his brother.
